The Idea Behind BoutBase for Pocket Boutonnieres

A simpler way to design pocket boutonnieres

My name is Beth, and I’ve been working in the floral industry for over 10 years. I’m the owner of For Floral Sake, a floral studio specializing in weddings, events, and hands-on workshops.

From the beginning, I’ve always tried to run my business in a way that feels organized, focused, and simple especially when it comes to production and event prep.

And if I’m being completely honest?
Boutonnieres and corsages have never been my favorite things to design.

The problem I couldn’t ignore

Early in my career, I started getting requests for pocket boutonnieres—especially for weddings.

I said yes (of course)…
and then immediately went into research mode.

I watched tutorials, studied techniques, and learned how other florists were creating them. And while the designs were beautiful, the process felt anything but efficient.

Most methods required:

Cutting cardboard
Wrapping bases in ribbon or foliage
Prepping everything before even starting the floral design

It felt like a lot of extra work for something that should be simple.

I remember thinking over and over again:
there has to be a better way to do this.

The moment everything changed

One day, while I was deep in the middle of prepping pocket boutonnieres (and probably complaining about it), my mom was in the studio with me.

She listened for a bit and then said,
“Hang on. I might have something.”

Now, a quick note about my mom: she’s incredibly creative. A trained seamstress, an avid scrapbooker and crafter; she's the kind of person who sees solutions where others don’t.

She came back with a small set of clear plastic pages from a scrapbooking kit.

“I don’t have a plan for these,” she said,
“but could they work for what you’re doing?”

They did more than work—they were exactly what I needed.

No prep. No wrapping. No extra steps.
Just a clean, clear base ready for design.

What would have taken nearly an hour of prep time…was solved instantly.

From a simple solution to a real product

There was just one problem. The craft store she found them at no longer existed.

I searched everywhere for something similar that was affordable and available in quantities that made sense for a floral business… and came up empty.

So, once again, my mom had an idea:

“Why don’t you have them made?”

That one suggestion led to working with a local manufacturer here in Minnesota. Together, we developed what is now BoutBase: a clear, structured base designed specifically for creating pocket boutonnieres with ease.
